Adobe Photoshop System Requirements

Adobe Photoshop is arguably the most well-known photo editing software. It has tools for creating, editing, and improving visual designs and photos that are useful for everyone ranging from novice designers to professional photographers. With features to add layering to images for flexibility and depth, adjusting and cropping images, adding filters and scenes, and amalgamating images, Photoshop has become the standard in digital photo editing. For an application that was first released in 1990, Adobe Photoshop has evolved significantly and does much more than simple photo editing for which it was originally designed. In this article, we will elaborate on the Adobe Photoshop system requirements for the latest version.

What Are Adobe Photoshop System Requirements?

With the addition and revamp of tools and interfaces for complex editing capabilities and better workflows, the latest version of Adobe Photoshop (version 22.0), released in October 2020, has higher hardware requirements for processor and graphics card requirements than ever before. Below are the details of the system specifications for Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop CPU Requirements

Adobe recommends the use of a processor with a clock speed of 2 GHz or faster with SSE 4.2 or later and is optimized for Intel processor with 64-bit support. While Photoshop runs faster with more cores, there are diminishing returns with each additional processor core. In most cases, using more than 6 cores for Photoshop does not justify the added costs.

Adobe Photoshop RAM Requirements

Adobe Photoshop uses random access memory (RAM) for processing images. While Adobe requires at least 8GB RAM, Adobe recommends at least 16GB or more. When there is insufficient memory, Photoshop can use hard-disk space, also known as a scratch disk, for processing information. However, this affects the performance of the Photoshop application.

Adobe Photoshop Storage Requirements

Adobe Photoshop requires storage space for installation in addition to the RAM required for reading and writing image information to be used as a scratch disk. Photoshop requires at least 4GB of free space in addition to that required for installation. Adobe recommends the use of a disk with a fast data transfer rate, ideally a solid-state disk (SSD), to be used as a scratch disk when there are scratch files to be processed that cannot be fit entirely in RAM.

Adobe Photoshop GPU Requirements

Certain Adobe Photoshop features, such as Artboards, Blur Gallery, Neural Filters, Select Focus, Select and Mask, and Smart Sharpen require GPU acceleration. Other features, such as 3D, Birds Eye View, Flick Panning, Oil Paint, and Scrubby Zoom, will not work without a GPU. While a minimum of 2GB of GPU memory with Metal support is required, Adobe recommends 4GB of GPU memory for 4k displays and greater.
