Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Features
One of the most important updates of Windows Server 2019 is its enhanced hybrid capabilities. The functionality and compatibility of Server Core is strengthened, but it is kept as lean as possible. Server Core App Compatibility option can be added to Windows Server 2010 Core installations, which significantly improves the compatibility of Server Core for server apps which already exist in market.
This is an on-demand feature or FOD (Feature on Demand), which is available on a separate ISO. Using DISM, it can be added to Windows Server Core installations & images only.
Windows Server 2019 makes a host of new changes to storage functionalities. Users can manage storage with Windows Admin Center which can be downloaded separately. Windows Admin Center is a browser-based app for maintaining servers, clusters, hyper-converged infra with Storage Spaces Direct, and Windows 10.
In storage functionality, Windows Server 2019 brings a new service called Storage Migration Service. With Storage Migration Service, users can migrate local accounts, clusters, Linux servers to Windows 2019 in a simple and easy way. With the use of graphical tool which indexes data on servers, which eventually transfers data and configuration to newer servers without need of apps to change anything.
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 is believed to be the most secure version to date, which has features like Device Guard and Credential Guard. The Device Guard feature prevents the malicious malware threats which are always present in the IT world. The Credential Guard feature protects your login information with more scrutiny.
A new feature called “expect breach” always assumes that some malware has been already been let in, which means Windows Server 2019 is always on high alert, continuously monitoring the vulnerable areas of the breach.
In server terminology – smaller the size of containers, better the efficiency. The containers in Windows Server 2019 are smaller, which means that it does not take much space on the server operating system. The resources aren’t wasted as space is organized efficiently to improve the performance of the server. As resources are managed efficiently, it helps you to get the most out of your investment. Also, Microsoft Windows Server 2019 promotes hybrid computing environment in a big way as it allows administrators to integrate current applications and infrastructure with services like Azure Backup and Azure File Sync.
If you are a small business, you are absolutely going to love this feature as it provides proper resource management leading to greater efficiency, which in turn can improve the productivity of your business.
Until a decade ago, it was difficult to have Linux and Microsoft systems together on one platform. In recent years, Microsoft has incorporated best of both the systems to build a superior product with minimum flaws. Windows Server 2019 takes it much higher with open support for Linux instances by including a subsystem that can handle Linux operating system on Windows. This helps organizations that are looking better optimization, fewer maintenance hassles, and increased flexibility at much lower costs.
Windows 2019 brings you cluster sets, which enable to increase the number of servers in a single SDDC solution beyond existing limits of a cluster. Moving online VMs between clusters with the cluster set is possible. Also, failover clusters in Server 2019 are automatically aware once they detect Azure environment and optimize the configuration to become highly available. There are many more improvements including USB and File Share witness enhancements, cluster hardening, cross-domain cluster migration, cluster infrastructural enhancements, and Kerberos instead of NTLM authentication.
